Rob -

Cannot remember whether I posted this before on one of the earlier
silverside discussions so excuse me if I repeat myself.

I knew a gentleman in Florida who regularly collected and maintained brook
silversides with high survival and longevity in small aquaria. His secret
was to never remove them from the water. He seined in fairly clear water.
When approaching shoreline, he stopped at the water's edge, and had one of
his kids go into the pocket of water between the brailes and dip the fish up
with soup ladles. He dipped them out of the bucket and into the aquarium
the same way.

Re sunflower seed buckets - One birder acquaintance of mine told me that the
seed hulls contain toxins which make them allelopathic, which is why they
are slow to decompose and why some plants will not grow on the ground under
bird feeders. I doubt that the stuff is toxic to fish and even so it
probably washes out of plastic buckets pretty quickly but it might be
something to think about.

Sounds like an idea worth trying although I would have to factor temperature
of the black buckets into the success/failure of the experiment. Black
buckets and 100+ degree Texas heat aren't conducive to anything's survival.
Maybe if I just tried a Coleman cooler with lid, I could get the
non-transparent quality while maintaining cooler temperatures? I'll do some
comparison the next time I'm out and report any significant results.
Thanks!

Rob, it might be an interesting experiment to spray paint some buckets black
(or wrap them with duct tape), then collect silversides and put some in each
type of bucket (white/semi-transparent and black/non-transparent), keeping
everything else the same. Maybe the black buckets will cause less stress,
perhaps if you put black lids over them right away and don't open them until
they're back at the nature center.
