The worst environmental disaster in recent millennia would be the evolution
of humans. We are in the midst of the worst extinction since the end of the
dinosaurs 65 million years ago. No asteroid is necessary just humans going
about business as usual. The extinction of the mega fauna of North America is
a good example but just a drop in the bucket compared to the destruction of
the rain forest, the pollution of the oceans or even the slow (to us)
extinction of animals great and small due to the rape and pillage of the
environment by humans. Humans have caused so much extinction that we often
call environments pristine that are actually quite depleted of species
because we just aren't aware of what an environment should look like without
human interference.
