It's not ignorance-- that's what libraries and such are for :-) I recall
that the Vermilion is a Wabash tributary, so has a different fauna than
other Illinois streams to the west.

Also, around the time of the 1999 convention American Currents had a good
article on the fishes of the region, written by Michael Rezner of the
Illinois Natural History Survey.

And after looking again at the 2 unnamed darters in the one photo I'm sure
they aren't fantails. Maybe rainbows?
