This book:

"A Guide to Larval Fishes of the Upper Mississippi River," 1990, by Leslie
Holland-Bartels, Susan Littlejohn, and Mark Huston,

is available from Minnesota Sea Grant (www.seagrant.umn.edu), 218-726-6191.
Its only $2.00 (and, incredibly, only $0.50 each for orders of 10 or more).

The book is a small (7 X 9 in; 107 pp), spiral-bound paperback that
"identifies distinguishing characteristics of over 60 species of fish" at
various stages. Bibliography contains over 200 references. There are two
(early- and late-stage) drawings for 19 families. Species accounts are
divided into the following sections: Habitat and Distribution, Reproduction
and Characteristics (Spawning, Eggs, Larvae, Juveniles, and Adults). The
two-toned green covers are restful and soothing. They beckon the reader to
enter the world of larval fish biology.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in native fishes,
especially early life history stages.
