I know a stream in Wayne County Ohio that runs crystal clear, seems
like all the time. It houses Clinostomus elongatus and Phoxinus
erythrogaster as well as rainbow darters and lots of other species.
Haven't really surveyed it carefully yet. The Clinostomus seem to be
fat and healthy while the Phoxinus are thin and scrawny. My theory
is that the insectivorous Clinostomus are well fed (the mosquitos are
pretty thick right now), while the algae-eating Phoxinus are starved
due to the low nutrient (no soil runoff) conditions and heavy shade.
I wonder if anyone else has observed this? Or maybe there is some
parasite? Anyway, it's the stream that runs through Wooster Memorial
Park on Silver Rd at Jefferson Rd which is just north of Rt 250 West
of Wooster Ohio in Wayne County.
