You silicon it to the inside of the glass at the top? Hmm, that's
interesting. I was going to fabricate a removable brace from 1/2 inch
Plexiglas that sort of fit over the top of the tank like a c-clamp.

I presume you are talking about the plastic cross brace. If you remove that
you could silicone a peice of glass there to replace it. I've seen a lot of
large tanks that way.
