If anyone wants to read the source of the snazzy phrase I used, "Can we defy
nature's end?", it's a very readable 2-page article in the journal Science,
Vol. 293, 21 September 2001, pp. 2207-2208, by Stuart Pimm and about 20
other conservation biologists. It's actually an optimistic article, saying
that we can save much of what's left of original ecosystems if we move now
and it might only cost $50 billion (cheap, for a planetary scale process!).

Anyway, if anyone is really interested in this article, I'd be willing to
