It kinda breaks the mold of "filter", but have you considered setting up a
sand and live substrate filter? Heck hang some lights on it (if this isn't
already in a greenhouse or something) and throw a bunch of hornwort into it.

That's what I'd do anyway... Drag in some gravel and rock substrate in
buckets, add it to some bags of store bought sand to seed the majority.
Doesn't take long for the bacteria to move throughout. You could either do
it "in tank" or use a 50 gallon rubbermaid tub connected to the system via
gravity with a bulkhead and returned by a pump.

Really, you could just have one common live filter running all of the tubs,
but that may get in the way of isolating a tank. Not sure how that
application would fit, but I think you have the idea. Then you'd always
have a nitrifying/_denitrifying_ "filter" ready to rock, no matter what you
were setting up.

I've given up on the "parasite brought home in substrate" idea. The only
trouble I've run into in a year now are these anchor worms (oooh and you
should see some of the goodies that came home on gravel that I'd like to
culture out! :) The anchor worms came in on fish, which is how I think most
infections/parastites come into captive systems anyway.
