This is an article published in last Sunday's Chicago Tribune Magazine.
It describes work by Dr. Kimberley Gray of NorthWestern U, Evanston, IL
on efforts to reduce the nitrates created by farm/fertilizer runoff
by improving the efficiency of the few existing wetlands.

According to the article:
"Gray recently made a key discovery. The stuff that makes wetlands work
most efficiently is the gluey mix of algae and microorganisms on the
surface called periphyton."

Dr. Gray is working on techniques to propagate periphyton on
artificial substrates.
