Several years ago I had the pleasure of visiting the New York Zoological
Society's endangered breeding program on St. Catherine's Island, a barrier
island off the middle of the Georgia coast.

There's something very odd about sitting in an old Wyllis jeep in the middle
of a couple of square miles of pasture in Georgia and having a herd of
zebras go thundering by......

A group of ring tailed lemurs were allowed to roam the island freely (they
don't swim) and there were ibyx, a large cage of lion maned tamerinds and
other weird but wonderful critters kept here, there and yon.

Quite the experience.
