The chilled coolers vary in design with regard to the location of the air vent. I shopped around to find one that had it as high as possible on the side. As a precaution I did secure a bit of plexi around it to help prevent heavy water inflow using a waterproof adhesive. So far no problems with it- but I don't push my luck. I usually stick to about 1/3 full of water. They seem pretty durable thus far. I've had it running outside while it was raining with the air intakes on the top and it kept running like a champ.
The thermostat is from an incubator unit used in my classroom to hatch eggs from some of the coldwater fish I had. I spliced it into the power cord of the cooler and placed the temp sensor in the cooler. Some form of control is necessary for the powered cooler because it is designed to take the internal temperature 45` below ambient and even higher above ambient if you have the heater turned on. I wanted more control than that. The cooler I use with an aquarium chiller attached works better in that regard as it hits a specific temp (dependent on model purchased and size) and keeps it there. For that one I just drilled a hole on the end opposite the drain hole and placed the probe through that. Screws attach the unit to the cooler itself and it can be run from the house, hotel, or cigarette lighter too. That one I can fill with water as the probe is intended to be submersed and the pumping unit is outside the cooler. Slosh out water will not hurt it.
