Many grasses are perennial and continue to grow during warmer spells and
perhaps even when quite cool. I recently collected Austrolebias in Uruguay in July
in air temperatures down to freezing and measured water temperatures down to
40 degrees F. Even though these were temporary pools on very green pasture
grasses and other plants and had cow manure in abundance the fish were healthy
and active and the nitrates and nitrites were zero.
