Thanks, I wonder why I have never seen them around before. I live close to
the great dismal swamp and there is lot of nasty water around. I dont go
playing in it much but on occasion have dipped a net in it to see what was
around. Even then I had never seen one, now all the sudden they are in my
daphina pool, in the middle of winter-in-that.

Are they useful as a fish food, the little bit of reading that I have done
so far says that the larva stage dont carry diseases and since they are in
decent water I would expect them to not be too bad off. If they are a
serious problem then I guess I will need to reculture my daphina pool and
start over.

Any ideas or just waste them.

They are called rat-tailed maggots. They are the larvae of syrphid
flies (family Syrphidae). I am not sure exactly waht species they are.
They are usually associated with raw sewage effluent, though they are
sometimes found in clean water. The long tail is used as a snorkel to
breathe out of the water.
