Chris Sharpf writes about the cover photo of the Spring 2000 American
Currents

"The pirate perch (Aphredoderus sayanus) starts out life with its anus and
urogenital opening positioned just in front of the anal fin. As the fish
matures, the openings migrate to the throat."

The position of its anus near its mouth is my guess.
