Mark -
...one of those weird carp species that has the large
mouth and the eye way down low on the head (grass or bighead I'm thinking)
It was most likely a bighead. Yep - they are pretty strange-looking. One
of my colleagues here-in-UNL makes fish head soup with them. In former days
when I worked for NE G&P, we would get HUGE bigheads in our backwater frame
nets. Fortunately, they don't seem to have gotten above Gavins Point yet
(at least not to my knowledge).
Mysteryman -
Yankton..isn't that where an alleged pirahna was caught several days ago?
has that been confirmed, or was it just another Pacu? If I recall
correctly, the size of the fish was mighty big for a non-pacu.
I saw one pic and it doesn't look nearly as large as reported. I'm sure
it's a piranha. We have a few in our lab that are as big as the one in the
pic. It's created a minor buzz among the local fishing community. And now
for your entertainment, here's a post from one of the local (NE) fishing
lists:
"To whoever is releasing piranha into public waters: could you add some
peacock bass as well. I can't afford the trip to South America."
