>>It's all about trying to make sense of natures great wealth of biotic
diversity. There are more than enough things out there to study without
anyone dreaming up imaginary stuff. <<
=20
What gets my goat is when the discussion rolls out on Reality Street and =
it just confuses the heck out of everyone, to the point where a listed =
animal's status is further confounded by "new evidence", as a worst case =
sceanrio. Furthermore, the perception or application that "evidence is =
truth" on the inside of scientific circles (where they should freakin' =
know better) or on the outside (where people are making policy decisions =
and choices about their lifestyles that affect real things) makes our =
choices that much more blurry and difficult because, well, we become =
desensitized to "new information" and we forget that there was a =
beautiful biological entity that started the question in the first =
place. =20
=20
But then Peter Unmack typed this:
=20
>>It is something that we can discriminate (hopefully via genes and
morphology) that is sufficiently different such that we can consider =
them
different evolutionary lineages.<<

Which is something I can explain to my Mom, my neighbor or a kid I am =
presenting to. I really like the combination of "discriminate" and =
"lineages". =20

I think you've nailed it Dave. I've been dealing with warped people and =
it's jaded _my_ perception. =20

Keep on askin' those questions :)

Todd
