Some also have the nice option of fitting a sold seperately foam prefilter. I used a similar PVS uptake tube as well before. That way I could have the current being generated near the top but the water being taken up far lower for an intent to keep the fish away because I did have some problems of redside dace getting sucked against the strainer. They seemed to like being right up against the current coming out and sometimes would get a liiiiittle too close.

I'll try and get some better photos of the actual hardware setup.. But it's pretty straight forward.

The powerheads come with strainers to prevent stuff from getting sucked into the impellor chamber, but if you don't have one... You can generally improvise. One way to is to get a piece of pvc that fits the inlet (cpvc parts usually fits the smaller ones better) and then drill a series of holes in the pvc "riser" coming off the inlet. Most times, if you drill enough holes in the riser, you can get it to where there isn't any pressure on the holes, and it won't even clog with plant debris etc.

Just drag the powerhead with you to the hardware store and build it right there in the isle :)

G'day folks

Have many folks added powerheads to tanks without attaching them to a
filter? I am thinking of doing this to provide current, but am wondering
what folks have put over the end to prevent fish from getting caught in
it?

Thanks
Peter
