I like the look better than the stuff you can buy... and frankly, I have a hard time
convincing myself to buy "dirt".
For planted tanks I like to add a layer of red clay (.5" to 1") to the bottom under the
sand/gravel for that laterite effect. Good source of iron for the plants.
