I think that I removed the last of this years Sunfish fry from my
water garden on Oct 14. The last
batch were all Greens. My total production was 221 that broke down as 39
Longears and 182 Greens.
Last friday I pumped out most of my pond, down to about 4" in the deepest
area and got in and netted
3 large and 2 very large Greens, the last breeders hopefully. Of the
remaining Sunfish there appears to
be 4 medium (3 -3 1/2"), 7 large and 2 very large. I think 3 of the
mediums are Orange Spots while 1
is a Longear as are all of the larger ones
As for the Minnows, I seem to have 1 red shiner, 3 Red Belly Dace
and 3 Creek Chubs and 1
Orange throat darter. I also found a dozen small crayfish that were under
and between some of the
flat rocks in the pond. The Chubs have gone back to Cedar Creek.
I kept 4 of the last young sunfish to place in a 29 gal Aquarium
to entertain me this winter. Too bad
that they are Greens. However, after only 2 days they became very tame
and will eat anything that I
give them.
