I'm with you, Mark. My vote is Lepomis gibbosus.

My vote is some Lepomis species. They have wide distribution and appeal and
are very North American.

NANFA members -

Which of the following species do you believe would best represent this
country as a national symbol ?

The bowfin, Amia calva
A true minnow, in the family Cyprinidae
Pumpkinseed, Lepomis gibbosus
Rainbow darter, Etheostoma caeuruleum
Those wild Alaskan salmon, Oncorhynchus spp.
Or the flagfish, Jordanella floridae

Please take a moment before 15 Oct to let us know.

There is a ballot in your latest issue of American Currents (p. 14) along
with a fascinating article supporting each of the above nominations. If you
do not want to tear out your ballot, photocopy it. If you have an aversion
to stamps or the US postal system, then email your choices to
ichthos at comcast.net.

If you do not like any candidates, then nominate and vote for one (or two)
of
your own. Just pick out a first and second choice.

And...to sweeten the deal....one randomly selected voter for the winning
species will be given a year's membership in NANFA.

Exercise your right to vote...and help us choose a national fish.
