The May 2001 issue of Boys'Life has an article called "Fish Tales" about
Professor Willy Bemis, 'the prof who puts the ick in ichthyology.'

It describes his scavenging at the Annual Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo.
Apparently a wide variety of fishes are brought in and then discarded.
Prof. Bemis and his students use the cast-off carcasses to collect
measurements and skeletal material for his studies and for the University of
Massachusetts museum collection.

The article also does a pretty good job of describing what an ichthyologist
does, and even lists educational requirements, salary range, and job
outlook.
