Rob,

yes, we4re great in "revitalizing" biotopes and making wind for it. We have
some enclaves in which rare species still survive but the disconnecting of
biospheres is at a level that is hopeless and not reversible. We build nice
bridges for deers, tunnels for toads and frogs but the natural reserve
aereas are way too small, too isolated and still influenced by pollution,
farming and exotic invaders. Germany was way too late in starting actions
and most is just "managing" but always with the primate on economy and
particulars (farmers, industrie, tourism etc.). There are some nice
"Potemkin Villages" to make people believe something has changed and is been
done. But I estimate that more than 80% of meadow ditches, ponds and
backlands have been destroyed (from my perspective of 30 years in the hobby)
within the last 25 years. And it4s going on.

OK, the greens and other lettuce-erotics perform sacred dances around any
visible Icebird but that wont save this species when its prey is eaten by
Chrysemis scripta elegans or the "little oil accident" has killed every fish
in the creek.

No, I am not pessimistic, maybe a little (?) cynical. I am planning autarky
for my hobby: Having the species I want, never letting them go (if possible)
and produce my own livefood in the yard. Well, we have 20000 squaremeters
for this.

Steffen
