I've used catalpa worms when fishing but these are different than the tent
caterpillars. These come from catalpa trees (I have one in my backyard) and
are smooth skinned. We pinch the head off and turn them inside out before
putting them on a hook. Great bait so I would imagine they make good food
as well.
