I seriously doubt that now that I've seen what a breeding male looks like.
I think the purple that we were observing was a light effect with the
overcast day we had. I've seen other juveniles in Ohio that had the same
coloration on overcast days. There's no mistaking the purple on the actual
(sub)species.
