Could be, but I'm sure a search of the web for lernea or anchorworm and photo
or image will find you a good picture.

The best is as you have done, pull them out, making sure you get the "root"
and all. They don't reproduce until they get to a reasonable size, hence if
they haven't multiplied yet, and you pull them all off then your problem
should be solved. Clout will work, but it is not recommended for use with
invertebrates as it is copper based I believe.
