I learned about this fish (H. formosa) from Exotic Aquarium Fishes by W.
Innes over 30 years ago. At the time to me fish from the Southern U.S. were
as exotic as those from South America. I wanted some bad but they never
showed up in my aquarium stores. Innes called them Mosquito fish.
Wintergreen a plant has something like 26 common names in North America
alone. Before modern communication things were named over and over in
different places. Common names aren't important that's the reason for
scientific names to eliminate the confusion. With that said why in modern
times do we what to give common names that mislead. A livebearer called a
killi is bad enough but top minnow just adds to the common belief that all
small fish are minnows.
