Niches are not management concepts, but instead explain how ecosystems work
and how species come to occupy their places in them. Adding species to
fill "unused" niches will certainly determine the future direction of the
evolution of that ecosystem. What's wrong with low diversity aquatic
systems? They're pretty interesting ecosystems in their own right with
unique species and species interactions-- like sand dunes or lava fields in
the terrestrial world. We need ice ages and natural disasters to keep the
environment from becoming boring and homogenous :-)
