Michael,

More is better, ie: I use a 48" double bulb florescent light fixture
equipped with one Gro-Lux (Plant bulb) and one Chroma 50 (daylight bulb).
One inch above the water is plenty close enough. Walmart usually has both
types and the fixtures.

I'm talking floating plants here, like Hornwort and/or
watersprite.............They may grow quickly and shade any substrate plants
that are rooted in the substrate and may need occasional thinng to permit
more light to reach the plants at the bottom of your tank.
