Freshwater Fish Distribution by Tim M. Berra (Academic Press, 604 pp.,
$89.95, hardbound). Atlas of nearly 170 families of freshwater fishes
worldwide. Perfect for those who need a quick but comprehensive introduction
to a particular family. Chock full of natural history nuggets.

This is a reference book, not a picture book (although it has copious b&w
illustrations).
