In a GFCI outlet, the GFCI monitors the electric potential difference
between the ground and neutral wires. If a difference between these two
wires is noted, then a ground fault has occurred and the GFCI trips out.
You do not need a grounding prong on a plug inserted into a GFCI to make it
work.
