I think people have to want to protect habitat as "open space." The view on
habitat is too narrow -- habitat in the public mind is a place where the
commodities live -- the fish they know about and want to fish for. It is not a
love of the fish they have, it is a love of recreation. We have got to replace the
commodity idea with a "here's what else 'open space' is good for" idea. It has got
to be some kind of passive and yet involved activity type use that replaces catch
and kill and our whole system of what is valued. I believe most people don't care.
If they could see some of the things living in streams and oceans they may take
interest, but they want something to do or something to take home. katrina
