It depends on the tank. I have seen what look like heavy gray plastic stock
tanks split open. I am not sure why this happened actually, but it may have
been from ice, so that is not pertenant to keeping fish. I would avoid
metal tanks all together. I had kept various fish in a small galvanized tank
when I was a kid, and they would die mysteriously after a couple weeks. I
am pretty sure it was from the metals leaching into the water.
