In addition to the PRECIOUS HERITAGE book recommended by J.R. I would suggest
FRESHWATER ECOREGIONS OF NORTH AMERICA: A CONSERVATION ASSESSMENT (Island Press,
2000). Lots of color maps (plus informative essays by NANFA members Peter
Unmack, Jim Williams, James Ladonski and Jean Krejca).
