According to Becker's Fishes of Wisconsin the common name is attributed to
"Charles C. Abbott, a pioneer icthyologist, who observed that a specimen he
had in an aquarium ate only other fish". Becker cites Forbes and
Richardson. 1920. The fishes of Illinois. Ill. Nat. Hist. Surv. Bull. 3.
357 pp. as the source for this info.
