Fish rules criticized, praised at Oregon hearing
Thursday, January 27, 2000

By Lance Robertson, The Register-Guard, Eugene, Ore.

Anti-government emotions ran high Monday night at a
hearing in Eugene on a federal agency's proposed rules
for saving the West Coast's dwindling salmon and
steelhead runs.

In the crowd of almost 250 people at a Eugene Water &
Electric Board meeting room was a large contingent
from Douglas County, wearing green T-shirts with
anti-government messages and testifying that the
National Marine Fisheries Service's fish-protection
rules were nothing more than an attempt to take over
private property.
