Shireen Gonzaga sent me the url below, which is a very comprehensive study
on the relative efficiencies and spectral responses of a list of possible
lighting systems for aquaria. The author, Ivo Busko, explains his analyses
and much of the physics of lighting systems. The best bulb of the ones he
examined is the Phillips ADV850, best in terms of both intensity of light
produced (photons/square mm of plant surface, basically) and quality of
spectrum produced. This is in keeping with his results showing that many
high-end T8 bulbs are often better than T12 bulbs for a variety of reasons
that he goes in to. Many metal halides are hugely inefficient in how much
_usable_ (not total) light they produce. So check it out:
