This question:
>What natural elements control Pike population in north eastern waters that
>are not present in the west?

May have been answered by this comment from Mr. Harper:
>I have a cabin on a lake in southeastern Ontario which
>contains Lake Trout, Lake Herring, Northern Pike, Walleyes, Largemouth bass,
>Smallmouth Bass, Yellow Perch, Bullheads, Rock Bass, Bluegill Sunfish,

Many if not most are direct competitors for resources (space, food), and
such competitive interactions are "natural elements". None of those are
native to the western US. There aren't many freshwater piscivores in the
west-- no catfish, sunfish or percids-- and the ones that are (pikeminnow,
dolly varden) are present in low numbers as adults in the streams that
salmon fry live in.
