To me it sound rational to prove the actual situation, detect tendencies and
try to do what can be done to avoid the hellbenders from coming to a
critical situation rather than waiting for that. In the past actions were
merely taken not before a species was in a critical situation but then it
is/has been too late too many times.
I completely agree to your look at pers. comm. and apparently judgements as
these are possibly affected by individual or political prejudices.
