NANFA-- Masquinonge (Esox lacustris)

Here's something I thought I'd never see (unless I know less about the Esox
species of North America than I think I do). I went to the address
http://www.umich.edu/~bio440/michlist.html. It was a list devoted to the
numbers of Michigan fish collections by species, and it had a type of pike
called the masquinonge and it was featured along with the muskellunge and had
a different scientific species name- lacustris whereas the muskellunge was of
course masquinongy. It was not marked down as an exotic, and the similarity
of the common name to the scientific name of the muskellunge makes me think
that it must be very similar-looking, closely related to, or a form of the
muskellunge if it is a valid species distinct from the muskellunge. They did
by the way mark down specimens that were exotic to Michigan, such as carp.
Anybody ever hear of these fish before and know any facts about them?
