1. Family is Mitsukurinidae
2. When I wrote "you can read more about it here," I meant the species (not
the recent capture in the Gulf).
3. According to Rick Martin's Reefquest website - 45 specimens are known
from the literature. The LA-MS fish would be the 46th.

The rare and mysterious goblin shark has been found near the coast of LA-MS.
You can read about its capture in the newest issue of Southeastern
Naturalist:
Parsons, G.R., G.W., Ingram, Jr., and R. Havard. 2002. First record of the
goblin shark, Mitsukurina owstoni, Jordan (Family Mitusukurinidae) in the
Gulf of Mexico. Southeastern Nat. 1(2): 189-192.
This is the second record of this fish in U.S. waters (the first was in
California in 1999).
The goblin shark was discovered near Japan approximately 100 years ago.
Only a few specimens have been collected, most from Pacific waters. The
fish is very unusual because of its color (bubble-gum pink) and its
prominent rostrum. The article by Parsons et al. includes photographs but
they are B*W.
You can read more about it here:
