Although I don't know that continuing a thread title "PetCo Sucks" may be
the best idea... (See PetsWarehouse) ... I do want to put my two cents in
about salt.

There has never, ever been any solid evidence to back up the idea that 1
TSP salt per gallon fo water does anything. Not only is this not enough
salt to prevent fungus or ich, some disease organisms and parasites
actually do better with a low level of salt in the water(!). I personally
_never_ recommend it for new people... too often they don't understand
that the only way it could be doing any good (if it actually does anything
to harm disease organisms) is if they only add it when doing water
changes. I know many long term novice hobbyists who have trouble keeping
fish like Plecos, Cory Cats, Neon Tetras, and the like alive in their
aquarium.... livebearers do just fine. On closer investigation, it turns
out that they put 1 TSP of salt per gallon of water in there when they do
their monthly water "change," which very often means only topping off the
aquarium! :) Salt doesn't evapourate, so they find their water has
gotten saltier and saltier as they mix salt into top off water.
Even low levels of salt may adversely affect some plants, by the by....
