I have clear experience (60 years) that it not only prevents osmotic shock,
keeps brine shrimp alive long enough for the fish to eat it, is essential to
keep Nothobranchius and Fundulus heteroclitus alive and cures some ailments.
However, none of this is true is your tap water contains appreciable dissolved
solids.
