I have had very good success with 95% of their diet (Bluegill and longear
sunfish) being the very cost effective Purina Trout Chow. If cracked to an
appropriate size they relish it and thrive on it. They will not eat it whole
even my 12+ inch Bluegill prefers it cracked. Must be a hard coating on those
1/4 inch pellets. I use a large mortar and pestle to crack it. If I need
finer for smaller fish I use a dry quick pass through the Waring Blendor in
short bursts and sift out the bigger chunks for the Bluegill, etc. I do
provide occasional treats like earthworms and paste foods, but mostly Trout
Chow. That is what got that Bluegill so big in a couple years from about 4
inches.
