Sounds like an ambitious project, and a really good one. I have one thought
on point number two below, to assist mechanical filtration. Setting up some
sort of fluidized bed filtration system would trap suspended particulate
matter, preventing the build-up of clumps as you describe. You can get these
designed for pools, and they're sometimes used in aquaculture setups for the
indoor rearing of Tilapia especially. These are not cheap systems, but for
running a 600 gal. it could be your simplest answer over time. Good luck...
