>>Is there a North American giant salamander not known to science,......

don't know about cave dwelling ones but i almost stepped on a greater siren
in a south georgia stream once and when it moved, i thought i'd was gonna
be eaten by an alligator....didn't realize what it was until i was on the
way back down.
it disappeared into the depths before i touched down.

also saw some kind of large salamander in a stream near Lake Winfield Scott
in north Georgia. i was about 13 or so at the time and i remember it
being around 2 or so feet long and *very* fast.....
