In the news article, they state that the most likely release method was
from a chinese food market, where the fish are often held on ice, live.

Judging by the size and species, its not something you're likely to run
across in a pet shop. Most shops don't carry that particular species, so
a hobbyist grow-out is fortunately ruled out.

For once, the aquarium hobby doesn't seem to be to blame.
