Lawmaker fights public intoxication charge
MONTGOMERY--State Rep. Johnny Ford, fighting a charge of public
intoxication, claimed in a city court trial he was not drunk but needed
police assistance in a dispute with his ex-wife when he was arrested last
August.
"There is no way in the world I would have called for police help if I was
drunk," Ford testified Thursday. "I was in complete control and command that
evening and was never allowed to explain to police my situation."
Ford, D-Tuskegee, was arrested last August and charged with public
intoxication. He had called police from the parking lot of a Montgomery
restaurant around midnight seeking help finding a taxi cab or a ride to his
car.
(material deleted here, last paragraph follows)
Police dispatched a patrol unit to the scene after a local cab company told
the 911 operator it would not send a car for Ford because he "had an
attitude."
I would agree, I think the guy has an attitude and doesn't have the wit
to leave it at home.
