NANFA-- Foam substrate

I am going to use 2" of ungraded sand, mixed with some clay for a 29
gallon tank I'm setting up. At one end, I am going to raise the sand to about
6". I am hoping the sand will not settle over time, and that aenorobic
conditions won't establish. The tank will be heavily planted, and a moderate
amount of fish, too. I am going to use a home-made sponge filter, along with
the plants acting as a filter. I have thought about using cut foam as a
substrate, with sand above that. anyone have any input? thanks __dan
