Hello from California. If you keep your native fish in a "pond" like
environment, then filters and aerators are not needed. My fish are in still
tanks, lots of java moss, and gravel. There are no covers to the tanks.
Light is from ambient sources or the room when there is electricity. In
that way, a blackout is irrelevant. Of course, this set up would not work
well for fish from swift flowing rivers, but has worked well for any of the
species I have tried. Of course, lots of water changes are very helpful.
Use the dirty water to water the garden. Fortunately, water temperature has
not been a problem with natives.
