Nope, but Liz has. She figured the March Hare was taken from something
outside and prior to the book.

I guess that is the type of information I was looking for. The close up
pictures and unusual behavior of the grouse made me think of a fiction book I
read as a juvenile. In the book, one of the characters (either the young
ranger or the eccentric local guy) referred to March as the Mad Month. I
don't recall the name of the book. It is the only time I have heard the
term.
